Pair Of College Of The Canyons Golfers Transfer To Four-Year Universities
College of the Canyons golfers Kris Grimes and Nicole De Francisco will continue their collegiate careers at four-year universities in the spring.
Grimes won the California Community College Athletic Association state title in 2011 and was the Southern California champion in 2012. She will transfer to Southern Illinois University.
De Francisco will continue her college golf career at Cal State Northridge. Both women will be able to join their teams in the spring midway through the NCAA season.
In college soccer, the College of the Canyons women’s team was ranked No. 6 in the final National Soccer Coaches Association of America poll.
COC reached the second round of the California Community College Athletic Association’s regional playoffs and lost to Ventura College 1-0. It was the only loss of the season for the Lady Cougars.
COC was 18-1-4 and won the Western State Conference championship, its fifth in school history and first since 2004.
Cerritos College was ranked No. 1 in the final NSCAA national poll.
In baseball, no players were elected to the Hall of Fame, the first time writers have failed to send anyone to Cooperstown since 1996.
Former Dodgers catcher Mike Piazza was among the first-time candidates on the Hall of Fame ballot. Barry Bonds, Sammy Sosa and Roger Clemens were also on the ballot for the first time.
Craig Biggio garnered the most votes, but was 39 shy of being elected.
The Dodgers have scheduled a couple of interesting exhibition games in spring training. They will play the World Baseball Classic team from Mexico in Arizona. The Dodgers will also play the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes, their single-A affiliate in the California League, in a split squad game before the season starts.
In the NBA, the Lakers lost to the San Antonio Spurs, 108-105. It was the fifth loss in a row for the Lakers who dropped to 15-20 on the season.
The Clippers, meanwhile, broke another franchise record winning streak with a 99-93 victory over the Dallas Mavericks.
The Clippers have a 13-game home winning streak, the longest in team history, and are 29-8 overall.
