Plum Canyon Elementary School was honored in an assembly Monday morning for raising more than $2,000 for SCV’s Habitat for Heroes’ Nickels for Nails campaign, a program of Habitat for Humanity Santa Clarita/San Fernando Valleys. Plum Canyon raised more money than any other school, in an effort that will help fund Habitat’s newest project, Veteran Village. When completed, the housing development will include 87 homes built specifically to meet the needs of low-income veterans.
The Saugus Union School District saw the fundraiser as a great learning opportunity for students, as well as a chance to make a lasting impact in the community.
“They just pulled out all the stops and did an absolutely fabulous job,” said District Superintendent Dr. Joan Lucid. “We are so proud of all their work and the way they’ve contributed back to the community. It’s what our kids do. They are wonderful in the classroom, but they also know how to contribute back into the community. And that makes for academic and personal success for each and every one of our students.”
SUSD Board of Trustees President Rose Koscielny also thought that Nickels for Nails helped students to understand that they can have an impact even at a young age.
“They showed everyone that kids can make a difference, one nail and one nickel at a time. We are so proud of them. They’re going to carry the pride of what they did the rest of their lives, and they’re going to affect the lives of so many people positively. It’s great to see them starting at this age.”
Plum Canyon School was also honored by the Southern California Gas Company for being the school to raise the most money. Mike Mizrahi, Regional Public Affairs Manager for SoCalGas and member of the Habitat for Heroes Advisory Board presented the school with $4,000 to use however they see fit. Mizrahi anticipated Plum Canyon purchasing new books and equipment, those things that often get overlooked during budget cuts.
“Our schools…are in dire need of support,” he said.
Partnering with Plum Canyon in Nickels for Nails was something very important to SoCalGas.
“We thought, we’ll do fundraising in the traditional way,” Mizrahi said. “But what about teaching kids some really good lessons, and teaching them early on in life how to give back to people in need? That’s a big So Cal Gas Company priority.”
