Supervisor Michael D. Antonovich officially kicked off the holiday season in Los Angeles County with the annual lighting of the County Christmas Tree at the Music Center in downtown Los Angeles, continuing a special tradition begun by late Supervisor Kenneth Hahn in honor of the county’s children.Antonovich was joined by talented young performers from the Castaic Middle School Choir in flipping the switch to light the 50-foot tree.
“As we light the County Christmas tree, we invite all of our County’s citizens to join us and reflect on the glory of the season and share in the celebration,” Antonovich said.
The tradition of lighting a Christmas tree in the United States began over a hundred years ago. In 1923, President Calvin Coolidge started the national Christmas Tree lighting ceremony on the White House lawn.
