    Saugus Girls Cross Country Team Headed To Nike Cross Nationals Meet

    The Saugus girls cross country team is headed to the Nike Cross Nationals meet in Oregon for the seventh year in a row.

    Coming off their seventh straight CIF State championship, the Saugus girls earned an at-large invitation to Saturday’s national cross country meet.

    Saugus senior AJ Yarnall also earned an invitation to the Nike Cross Nationals. He will be making his first appearance in the meet.

    The Saugus girls team finished in 12th place in the meet last year. From 2007 to 2010, the girls were in the top four, but have never won the Nike Cross Nationals.

    Saugus Girls Cross Country Team Wins 7th State Title In A Row

    The Saugus girls cross country team added to its dominance by winning another CIF State championship at Woodward Park in Fresno.

    The Saugus girls won their seventh state title in a row. Sophomore Samantha Ortega was the runner-up in the Division II race and five Saugus runners finished in the top 50.

    Ortega completed the course in 17 minutes, 33 seconds. Heidi Hoslet was 21st in 18 minutes, 32 seconds. Abigail Frankian was 23rd, Katie Huntington was 35th and Olivia Altieri was 49th.

    The girls scored 97 points and finished ahead of La Costa Canyon, which came in second with 108 points.

    Valencia Football Team Faces Palos Verdes In CIF Semifinals

    The Valencia football team hosts Palos Verdes in the semifinals of the CIF Southern Section Northern Division playoffs tonight.

    The Vikings, the second-seeded team in the playoffs, are coming off a 42-7 win over Quartz Hill in the quarterfinals.

    Palos Verdes, the No. 3 seed in the playoffs, eliminated Hart, 49-28, in their quarterfinal playoff game.

    COC Women's Soccer Team Loses To Ventura College In Playoffs

    The College of the Canyons women’s soccer team was shut out by Ventura College, 1-0, and eliminated from the Southern Regional playoffs.

    COC, seeded No. 2 in the playoffs, lost for the first time this season. The Lady Cougars were ranked No. 3 in the nation by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.

    Lupita Magana scored the lone goal of the game off a free kick in the 31st minute. Ventura entered the second-round playoff match as the No. 7 seed.

    COC finishes with a 18-1-4 record.

    Saugus Girls Win CIF Cross Country Championship

    It was a banner weekend for the cross country runners from the Santa Clarita Valley.

    The Saugus girls cross country team reclaimed the CIF Southern Section Division II championship at Mt. San Antonio College.

    Samantha Ortega was the runner-up in the girls race for Saugus. Abigail Frankian was 16th and Heidi Hoslet was 26th.

    The Saugus girls won their sixth CIF championship in the past seven years. They were second to Simi Valley last year.

    Valencia Football Team Advances To Semifinals Of CIF Playoffs

    The Valencia football team is the only team from the Santa Clarita Valley still alive in the CIF playoffs.

    The Vikings shut down the high-powered Quartz Hill offense and won, 42-7, in the quarterfinals of the Southern Section Northern Division playoffs.

    Valencia quarterback Sean Murphy threw for 349 yards and four touchdowns after building a 28-7 lead.

    The Vikings, seeded No. 2 in the playoffs, reached the semifinals for the third time in the past four years. They face third-seeded Palos Verdes on Friday night.

    COC Cougars Look To Complete Turnaround Season

    For the first time in four years the Cougars of College of the Canyons will be playing postseason football. This Saturday the Cougars will play Santa AnaCollege in the Southern California Bowl. The game will be at 6:00 p.m. and can be heard live on AM 1220 KHTS.

    The COC football season seemed lost when after week five COC sat with a 1-4 record. Turnovers, penalties and inexperience seemed to doom the season.

    Valencia Plays High-Scoring Quartz Hill In CIF Football Playoffs

    The Valencia football team meets a high-scoring Quartz Hill team in the quarterfinals of the CIF Southern Section Northern Division playoffs tonight.

    Valencia put up 43 points in its first round game against Paso Robles. Quartz Hill is averaging 36.4 points per game this seaosn and beat Canyon, 56-49, in September.

    Speaking of Canyon, the Cowboys play the surprise team of the Northern Division playoffs, Atascadero.

    The Master's College Women's Volleyball Team Rakes In Recognition

    The postseason awards are starting to pour in for The Master’s College women’s volleyball team.

    Bobby Blanken was selected as the Golden State Athletic Conference coach of the year. He guided the Lady Mustangs to their first trip to the NAIA National Championship tournament.

    The Master’s College is ranked No. 6 in the NAIA and has a 26-5 record.

    COC's Kristin Grimes Finishes In 4th Place At State Championship Golf Tournament

    College of the Canyons golfer Kristin Grimes had the lead in the first round of the California Community College Athletic Association Women’s Golf State Championship, but dropped to fourth place in the second round.

    She was 10-over in the two-day championship at Temecula Creek Inn Resort. She won the state championship last year and was the Southern California Regional champion this year.

    Grimes and Irvine Valley College’s Kate Cho were tied with 3-over 75s after the first round of the state championship.
