    West Ranch, Valencia Boys Basketball Teams Improve To 2-0 In Foothill League

    The West Ranch boys basketball team improved to 2-0 in Foothill League play with a 62-48 win over Canyon.

    Kevin Harris had another big game for West Ranch, scoring 19 points and making 7-of-9 shots from the field. Ako Kaluna scored 11 points and had nine blocks for the Wildcats.

    Ben Taufahema led Canyon with 12 points. Teammate Mark Bell scored 11.

    Santa Clarita Christian Boys Basketball Team Cruises Past Vasquez

    The Santa Clarita Christian boys basketball team beat Vasquez, 66-42. Larue Nixon scored 23 points, 16 in the second half, for Santa Clarita Christian.

    Phillip Webb scored 20 points as the host Cardinals built an eight-point lead, 25-17, at halftime. Santa Clarita Christian improved to 6-4.

    The Santa Clarita Christian girls basketball team lost to Vasquez, 49-12. Aubrey Robinson scored all 12 points for the Cardinals.

    Pair Of College Of The Canyons Golfers Transfer To Four-Year Universities

    College of the Canyons golfers Kris Grimes and Nicole De Francisco will continue their collegiate careers at four-year universities in the spring.

    Grimes won the California Community College Athletic Association state title in 2011 and was the Southern California champion in 2012. She will transfer to Southern Illinois University.

    De Francisco will continue her college golf career at Cal State Northridge. Both women will be able to join their teams in the spring midway through the NCAA season.

    West Ranch Boys Basketball Team Hands Hart Its First Loss Of Season

    The West Ranch boys basketball team handed Hart its first loss of the season, 70-63, in the Foothill League opener for both teams.

    Hart entered the game with a 16-game winning streak and as the top-ranked team in the CIF Southern Section Division 3AAA poll.

    West Ranch never trailed in the game, jumping out to a 9-0 lead in the first quarter and outscoring Hart 22-10 in the second quarter.

    Ako Kaluna led all scorers with 24 points and had 17 rebounds for West Ranch. Lewis Stallworth scored 18 points and was the top scorer for Hart.

    Undefeated Hart Faces West Ranch In Foothill League Opener In Boys Basketball

    The Hart boys basketball team plays West Ranch in the Foothill League opener, a match-up of two top teams in the recently released CIF Southern Section polls.

    Hart, undefeated at 16-0, is the No. 1 team in the Division 3AAA rankings. West Ranch, at 10-4 and coming off a two-point loss to Village Christian, the reigning CIF State Division V champion, is ranked No. 2 in the Division 1A rankings.

    The game is at Hart High. Tip-off is set for 6:30.

    Valencia Boys Basketball Team Beats Chatsworth, Wins 12th Game Of Season

    The Valencia boys basketball team beat Chatsworth, 58-46, in a game at College of the Canyons. Angel Cardenas scored 18 points and Garrett Mike added 10 for Valencia.

    The Vikings won their 12th game of the season. They open Foothill League play against Saugus on Tuesday.

    The Canyon boys lost to Hoover from San Diego, 78-55, in a game at COC.

    Hart Boys Soccer Team Loses To La Canada, Drops To 8-2-1

    The Hart boys soccer team lost to La Canada, 2-1, in a match played at Hart High.

    The Indians’ lone goal came when La Canada knocked the ball into its own goal in the 61st minute of the game.

    La Canada took a 1-0 lead late in the first half. The Spartans went up 2-0 on a goal in the 46th minute, right after halftime.

    Hart, ranked No. 5 in the Southern Section Division IV poll, lost for only the second time this season. The Indians are 8-2-1.

    Hart Boys Basketball Team Improves To 16-0 With Win Over Rio Mesa

    The Hart boys basketball team won ugly, but stayed undefeated with a 75-64 win over Rio Mesa.

    Down by two points in the third quarter, the Indians rallied to win their 16th game in a row to start the season.

    Myles Franklin caught fire in the final period scoring nine points and finishing with 15. Teammate Lewis Stallworth led Hart with 21 points and eight rebounds.

    The Indians begin Foothill League play against West Ranch on Tuesday.

    The Master's College Women's Basketball Team Off To Best Start In School History

    The Master’s College women’s basketball team blew out UC Merced, 87-49, in the final game of the Jersey Mike’s Holiday Classic to remain undefeated.

    The Lady Mustangs, ranked No. 13 in the NAIA, are 11-0 and off to the best start in school history. Niclole Nitake scored 15 points off the bench and made five 3-pointers. Four players from The Master’s College scored in double figures.

    The Lady Mustangs take their undefeated record on the road against Cal State San Marcos tonight.

    The Master’s College men beat Bethesda of Maryland, 77-67. Derrick Fain scored 28 points and made seven 3-pointers to lead the Mustangs.

    Summer Olympics Highlight Top Sports Stories Of 2012

    Santa Clarita’s Allyson Felix ended a eight-year quest for Olympic gold in the Summer Games in London. She won three gold medals in track and field. After winning silver medals in the 200 in the 2004 Summer Games in Athens and 2008 in Beijing, Felix finally broke through with her first gold medal in the 200 in London.

    She went on to win gold medals as part of the 4x400 and 4x100 relay teams. The United States women’s 4x100 relay team broke the world record en route to winning the gold medal.

    The United States track and field team won nine gold medals in the London Summer Olympics. Felix won three of them.

    The Santa Clarita Valley was well-represented on Team USA for the Summer Olympics. A Saugus High graduate was on the men’s volleyball team and a Hart High graduate was on the men's swim team. A Canyon High graduate and a track coach at College of the Canyons competed on the women’s track and field team.

    Away from the Olympics, runners dominated the sports scene in the Santa Clarita Valley. Area high schools and colleges produced CIF Southern Section, state and national champions.
