The Valencia football team took the first step toward winning the Foothill League championship with a 54-41 shootout win over Canyon in a game heard live on AM 1220, KHTS.
Vikings quarterback Sean Murphy set a school record with six touchdown passes and his team needed every one of them.
He passed for 457 yards and threw two interceptions. Receiver Malik Townsend caught seven passes for 176 yards and two touchdowns.
Canyon quarterback Cade Apsay threw for 390 yards and four touchdowns in the loss.
Hart, the No. 1 ranked team in the CIF Southern Section Northern Division, shut out Saugus, 35-0. Indians quarterback Brady White threw for 390 yards and three touchdowns.
Hart and Valencia are tied for first place in the Foothill League standings with 3-0 records. Canyon drops to second place with a 2-1 record.
The West Ranch football team won its first league game of the season, 35-13, over Golden Valley.
Mark Collins scored three touchdowns for West Ranch, which snapped a five-game losing streak.
The Trinity football team rallied in the second half and beat Faith Baptist, 35-34. The Knights scored 27 unanswered points after being down 34-8 in the second quarter.
Dakota Prochnow scored the winning touchdown on an 8-yard run with 40 seconds to play in the game.
The Santa Clarita Christian football team lost to Saddleback Valley Christian, 21-0, and saw their five-game winning streak come to an end.
The USC Trojans, ranked No. 11 in the nation, blew out Colorado, 50-6, in a record-setting game for quarterback Matt Barkley and receiver Robert Woods.
Barkley threw six touchdown passes and broke the school record with 102 career TDs. He needed four to break Matt Leinart’s school record for touchdown passes.
Woods set two school records. He caught four touchdown passes in the game and set the school record for career receptions. He caught eight passes for 132 yards and has 220 receptions in his career at USC. Woods broke the school record for career receptions held by Dwayne Jarrett.
In baseball, the San Francisco Giants beat the St. Louis Cardinals, 6-1, in Game 6 of the National League Championship Series. The series is tied at three games apiece. Game 7, with a trip to the World Series against the Detroit Tigers on the line, is tonight in San Francisco.
In the NBA preseason, the Lakers lost to the Sacramento Kings, 99-92, and are the only team that hasn’t won a preseason game yet.
