College of the Canyons Announces Hall Of Fame Class For 2013

The College of the Canyons announced its Hall of Fame class for 2013. The 1975 COC cross country team tops the list of six inductees set to enter the school’s athletic Hall of Fame in January.

The cross country team, coached by Monty Cartwright, won the first state championship for COC.

Ray Whitten, COC’s softball coach from 1984 to 2007, basketball player Nick Sanderson, swimmer Christine Worby, softball player Chantal Pershing and baseball player Robert Corrales were also selected for the COC Hall of Fame.

In women’s volleyball, the College of the Canyons beat Glendale in four games. Kelsea Hundtoft had 16 kills to lead COC, ranked 23rd in the state.

Cory Nua had 13 kills for the Lady Cougars.

In college soccer, The Master’s College men lost to Concordia, 1-0, in a Golden State Athletic Conference game.

Christian Ramirez scored the lone goal of the game for Concordia, the No. 7 team in the NAIA. Ramirez tied the school record with his 19th goal of the season.

In high school tennis, three players from Hart and one from Golden Valley advanced to the semifinals in the Foothill League Individual Tournament at The Paseo Club.

Rebecca Ho, the reigning singles Foothill League champion from Golden Valley, won her first round match, 6-1, 6-1, and her second round match, 6-0, 6-0, to reach the semis.

Natalia Munoz, Jackie Resler and Proyfon Lohaphaisan from Hart reached the semis as well.

The finals are set for today at The Paseo Club in Valencia.

In the NBA preseason, the Lakers lost to the Clippers, 97-91. Kobe Bryant and Dwight Howard did not play for the Lakers, which dropped to 0-7 in the preseason.

Pau Gasol led the Lakers with 17 points and eight rebounds.

In baseball, the San Francisco Giants won Game 1 of the World Series, 8-3, over the Detroit Tigers.

Pablo Sandoval hit three home runs and became the fourth player to hit three home runs in a World Series game. Reggie Jackson and Albert Pujols did it once. Babe Ruth hit three home runs in a World Series game twice.

Game 2 is tonight in San Francisco.
