The College of the Canyons women’s soccer team was shut out by Ventura College, 1-0, and eliminated from the Southern Regional playoffs.
COC, seeded No. 2 in the playoffs, lost for the first time this season. The Lady Cougars were ranked No. 3 in the nation by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.
Lupita Magana scored the lone goal of the game off a free kick in the 31st minute. Ventura entered the second-round playoff match as the No. 7 seed.
COC finishes with a 18-1-4 record.
In college football, Cal fired coach Jeff Tedford, who recruited heavily from the Santa Clarita Valley.
Among the players who went to Cal under Tedford are Hart High’s Kyle Boller, Valencia High’s Shane Vereen and J.J. Arrington, who played at College of the Canyons. All three played in the NFL as well.
Canyon High’s Nate Longshore played quarterback at Cal under Tedford and West Ranch running back Jeff Coprich is currently at Cal.
Tedford coached at Cal for 11 years and won a school record 82 games.
In college basketball, No. 11 UCLA beat Georgia, 60-56, in the consolation game of the Legends Classic tournament in New York.
Shabazz Muhammad made his first start for the Bruins and scored 21 points
In the NBA, the Lakers beat the visiting Brooklyn Nets, 95-90, in coach Mike D’Antoni’s debut on the sidelines.
Dwight Howard scored 23 points and had 15 rebounds as the Lakers won their third game in a row. They have won five of the past six games and are over the .500 mark for the first time this season.
The Lakers are on the road for a game against the Sacramento Kings tonight.
