    Pair Of College Of The Canyons Athletes Set For U.S. Junior Track And Field Championships

    Tim White and Anthony Fowler from College of the Canyons will compete in the U.S. Junior Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Drake University in Iowa.

    White will compete in the triple jump. He won the community college state championship in the triple jump. He is one of 16 athletes, which include top competitors from NCAA Division 1 schools and club track teams, entered in the triple jump.

    Fowler will race in the 800 meters. He advanced to the California community college finals in the 800 and is ranked ninth among the runners entered in the race.

    The Master's College's John Gilbertson Vies For Spot On United States Track And FIeld Team

    John Gilbertson from The Master’s College will compete in the 10,000 meters at the USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Drake University in Iowa on Thursday.

    He will be racing for a spot on the United States national team that will compete in the IAAF World Championships in Moscow, Russia, in August.

    Gilbertson set the fastest time in the world in the 10K at the Stanford Invitational in March. He won the race in 28 minutes, 30.35 seconds.

    Valencia High Graduate Max Homa 2-over In First Round Of US Open Golf Tournament

    Valencia High graduate Max Homa was 2-over after six holes in the first round of the US Open golf tournament at Merion Golf Club in Pennsylvania.

    Homa had bogeys on the third and fourth holes. Play was suspended because of darkness and the opening round of the US Open was delayed twice by rain and storms.

    Hart Football Team Goes 2-0-1 In 7-on-7 Passing Tournament

    The Hart football team went 2-0-1 in a 7-on-7 passing tournament that featured Valencia, West Ranch and Alemany. It also pitted brothers Mike and Dean Herrington, coaches of the Hart and Alemany teams, against each other.

    Hart beat Alemany, 18-12, as both teams decided to play 11-on-11 man football. The Indians also beat West Ranch and played Valencia to a 36-36 tie.

    Three Foothill League Softball Players Selected To All-CIF Team

    Three players from the Foothill League were selected to the All-CIF Southern Section Division 1 softball team.

    West Ranch’s Kylie Sorenson, Valencia’s Kristina Brackpool and Maddy Jelenicki from Saugus earned spots on the Division 1 first team.

    West Ranch reached the semifinals of the CIF Southern Section Division 1 playoffs and lost to Santiago Corona, the eventual Division 1 champion.

    Hart Basketball Team Reaches Championship Game of Watts Games

    The Hart basketball team is in the championship game of the Watts Games after a 58-49 victory over Westchester.

    Lewis Stallworth scored 24 points for Hart in the semifinal game at Dorsey High. The Indians beat Redondo Union in the quarterfinals.

    Santa Clarita Blue Heat Women's Soccer Team Rally For Draw Against Colorado

    The Santa Clarita Blue Heat women’s soccer team scored two second-half goals and played the Colorado Rapids to a 2-2 draw at The Master’s College.

    Yadira Toraya scored off a corner kick in the 70th minute to cut the Rapids lead in half, 2-1.

    Lizz Franco scored a minute later off a free kick to tie the score, 2-2.

    Santa Clarita Blue Heat Faces Seattle Sounders In W-League Soccer Game

    The Santa Clarita Blue Heat women’s soccer team takes on the Seattle Sounders in a W-League match tonight, the first of two games this weekend at The Master’s College.

    The Blue Heat plays the Colorado Rapids on Sunday.

    The Blue Heat split their first two games of the season, a win over the LA Strikers in the opener and a loss to the Pali Blues.

    Santa Clarita Valley Baseball Products Anticipate Start Of MLB Draft

    The Major League Baseball draft begins today with plenty of players from the Santa Clarita Valley waiting for their names to be called.

    The first two rounds of the draft are tonight. College of the Canyons third baseman Trey Williams, a Valencia High graduate, is the highest rated player from the Santa Clarita Valley, but his name might not be called until Day 2 of the draft.

    His COC teammate, shortstop Chad De Le Guerra, is also a top prospect in the draft.

    Valencia High Graduate Madison Shipman Selected To All American Softball Team

    A pair of Valencia High graduates earned some national recognition this week.

    Madison Shipman, a shortstop on the University of Tennessee softball team, was selected as an All American by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association.

    She helped the Lady Volunteers reach the championship round of the NCAA Women’s College World Series against Oklahoma. Shipman, a junior at Tennessee, hit .367 with 11 home runs entering Monday’s game against Oklahoma.
