SCV Fishing Report December 18th: Local Lakes and Saltwater Report
It's that time again...for the KHTS AM-1220 fishing report:
1) Castaic Lake...Despite the rain, fishing for both trout and stripers improved (the recent trout plant might have something to do with it). For stripers...try fishing near Kong Island, Necktie Canyon or the Marina. A 19 pounder was caught this past week! Some bass are being caught near Hawks Nest on nightcrawlers.
2) Pyramid Lake...Striped bass up to 10 pounds have been biting best on imitation trout lures ( there was a recent DFG trout plant two weeks ago). Slow for crappie. A few catfish are biting on nightcrawlers and cut mackerel.
3) Lake Piru...Similar situation as last week, with a few bass biting here and there. The crappie fishing is your best bet; find some structure and fish small jigs tipped with mealworms for best results.
4) Lake Cachuma...A recent trout plant was a good thing for fisherman trolling for trout near Harveys Bay, Cachuma Bay and the Dam; rapalas are working well. Fish the coves for both the catfish and crappie.
NOTE: Diamond Valley Lake in Hemet is having its "Striper Derby" from December 22nd thru January 6th; and the entry fee is just $10.00. I say you should take a shopping break and do some fishin'.
Rain put a damper on the fishing for the fleet, but the fish are there. So, when the boats do make it out to the rockfishing grounds with enough anglers (and conditions allow), there continues to be excellent catches, as noted below:
Landings from Long Beach to Marina Del Rey:
On Saturday, the "Enterprise" from Long Beach Marina with 15 anglers nabbed 18 sheephead, 37 sculpin, 24 whitefish, 20 red snapper, 30 salmon grouper and 51 rockfish. The "Gail Force" from Pierpoint Landing got 18 legal sized lobster on its Saturday night hoop net trip. The "Tradition" is now running trips out of Long Beach Sportfishing. The "Spitfire" from Marina Del Rey on Friday with a light load of only 8 anglers brought back 80 red snapper, 3 sheephead, 12 sand bass and 2 calico bass.
At Ventura Sportfishing, the "Pacific Dawn" on its overnight trip on Sunday landed limits of lingcod (38), 2 cabezon, 15 whitefish, 5 sheephead, and 178 rockfish. Meanwhile at CISCO Landing in Oxnard, the "Sea Jay" with 9 anglers returned yesterday with 90 rockfish, 11 lingcod, and 2 sheephead. The "Aloha Spirit" scored 50 lingcod (limits) along with 210 rockfish, and 1 whitefish. The "Island Tak" with 12 anglers got 24 lingcod, 120 rockfish, 46 whitefish and 15 sheephead. The "Mirage" on Sundays trip caught limits of lingcod (42), limits of rockfish (210), 7 whitefish, and 5 sheephead. On Fridays trip the "Mirage" also had limits of lingcod and rockfish plus a few ocean whitefish.
I want to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy and Healthy New Year!
Note: I will be taking a couple weeks off from doing the fishing report to be with my family and friends. Be safe. This is Halibut Hal reporting for your Hometown Station, KHTS AM-1220.
