Mail Thieves Caught In Saugus
Alert resident catches suspects in the act.
Two Granada Hills residents were arrested Monday when they were caught in possession of stolen items from mailboxes in the 24000 block of Sheffield Lane in Saugus.
Edgard Nunez and Sarah Paloyo were taken into custody after deputies were tipped off by an alert neighbor who observed the suspects removing objects from mailboxes with red flags raised to alert the carrier of outgoing mail.
Deputies confiscated checks, credit statements and Netflix DVD movies belonging to Sheffield Lane residents as well as burglary tools from the suspects and their vehicle. The suspects may be responsible for additional mail theft incidents in the area.
Because of the rise in incidents of mail theft, Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff's Station officials are encouraging all residents to hand their outgoing mail directly to a carrier or take it to a local postal drop off point as apposed to leaving it in an unsecured mailbox and putting the red indicator flag up.
Both suspects were booked at the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff's Station on suspicion of felony theft of United States mail and misdemeanor identity theft and possession of burglary tools. They are each being held in lieu of $100,000 bail.
