Local Democratic Leader Throws Hat In State Senate Ring
MacFarland steps up to challenge of running for office.
Bruce McFarland, long active in Democratic party issues and organizations in the Santa Clarita Valley, has decided to challenge incumbent State Senator George Runner for his 17th District seat.
“We’re seeing people coming out who are committed to change,” he said. “Young people who have never registered and those who haven’t voted in years are registering as Democrats and getting involved specifically to vote for president. The Republicans are not happy with the alternatives, so why not me?”
McFarland credits his mother, a long-time Democratic party activist, for his interest in the political process and desire to help his community. He proudly remembers being the youngest member of the then-Soledad Township Democratic Club, following in his mother’s footsteps.
McFarland helped organize the Democratic Club of SCV, which focused strictly on party development, then founded the Democratic Alliance for Action, which became a more issues-active group.
“I wanted to be more involved in addressing the issues instead of being a party machine,” he said. “I wanted to make a difference.”
While he’s been a mover and shaker in the local political arena, this is the first time McFarland has run for an elected public office.
