Joey Sindelar Leads AT&T Champions Classic
His 8-under par 64 is lowest first round in tournament history.
Joey Sindelar shot an 8-under 64 in the first round of the AT&T Champions Classic at Valencia Country Club on Friday.
He has a one-stroke lead after setting the tournament record for the lowest first round score at Valencia Country Club.
Tom Purtzer shot a 7-under 65 in his first round. He is followed by David Edwards and Jay Haas, both at 5-under after the first round.
This is the first time Sindelar has led a Champions Tour event after the first round. He did it eight times in his career on the PGA Tour. The last time he was the leader after the first round of a PGA tournament was in 2004 at the Bell Canadian Open.
Only four golfers who led on the opening day of the AT&T Champions Classic have gone on to win the tournament. The only Champions Tour golfer to lead the first round and win at Valencia Country Club was Gil Morgan in 2004. He shared the lead with four other golfers after the first round and won by two strokes.
The AT&T Champions Classic continues today and Sunday at Valencia Country Club. Sindelar is scheduled to tee off at 12:23 p.m. with Purtzer and Edwards.
