Less than a full day after AMGEN Tour of California officials announced that they would like to have Lance Armstrong on the race’s roster, the cycling legend has confirmed that he will accept that invitation.

"I will be competing in the Amgen Tour of California," confirmed Lance Armstrong.  "The level of competition, the challenge of the course and the highly professional atmosphere make it the ideal situation for me to continue my training.  I also have chosen the Amgen Tour of California because of the race's record of supporting cancer awareness and research through their Amgen Breakaway from Cancer initiative, and their commitment to partner with our Lance Armstrong Foundation.  I look forward to racing once again in the United States in what we consider the best race outside of Europe."

This is one of five races that he has said he would like to participate in during 2009.

“We are really pleased and delighted by this development,” said Andrew Messick, President of AEG Sports, which puts on the AMGEN Tour of California. “We think it is going to be fantastic for the sport of cycling in America, we think its going to be fantastic the AMGEN Tour of California and all of our partners, and we also think its going to be fantastic for the cancer cause.”

Armstrong decided to return to professional cycling to help raise awareness of cancer.

“We think that Lance Armstrong’s focus on raising awareness for cancer is consistent and supportive of our anti cancer initiative that we have been developing through AMGEN and through the breakaway from cancer initiative,” Messick said.

The AMGEN Tour of California is a 9-day, 800 mile race that stretches from Sacramento to San Diego, stopping in Santa Clarita for the start of Stage 8.  The race runs February 14th – 22nd.
