Golden Valley Baseball Team Wins Fourth Straight Foothill League Game Print E-mail

sportsgoldenvalleyThe Golden Valley baseball team got a two-run, seventh-inning home run from Brandon Smith and beat Valencia, 7-6. It was the first win in baseball for Golden Valley over Valencia in school history.

Golden Valley is 4-4 in Foothill League play and has won four straight league games. Valencia lost its second league game and is 6-2.

Quincy Quintero drove in four runs for Valencia. He had a two-run single in the third inning and a game-tying, two-run double in the fifth inning.

West Ranch beat Canyon, 6-2, and is one game out of first place in the Foothill League standings. Randy Poe was 2-for-3 with a two-run double in the second inning.

West Ranch starter Allen Sarkissian tossed six effective innings, striking out three and giving up four hits. Matt Blake came in for Sarkissian with two on and nobody out in the seventh inning to close out the game.

The Hart baseball team won a tight one against Saugus, 2-1. Daniel Dietz had a triple and a double and scored Hart's first run to give his team a 1-0 lead in the first inning.

Hart's Tyler Glasnow made his first start of the season and struck out 11 in 5 2/3 innings.

Saugus starter Tommy Kister pitched a complete game, five-hitter, and surrendered only one run. Brad Buchignani drove in the only for Saugus with an RBI double in the fourth inning.

The College of the Canyons softball team won the Western State Conference, Blue Division, championship after splitting a pair of games against Bakersfield College. COC lost to Bakersfield, 13-12, in the first game, but won the second, 13-1.

Whitney Bruce and Melissa Herndon each hit home runs in the second game. Herndon drove in four runs.

Ruby Herrera hit two home runs and had four RBIs and Alexis Caso hit a home run and knocked in six runs for COC in the first game.

The College of the Canyons men's golf team won a Western State Conference by shooting 10-under par at the Marshall Canyon Golf Course in La Verne. Alex Macaluso and Chris Baingo each shot 3-under 69s to lead COC.

The Master's College baseball team beat Azusa Pacific 4-3. Chris Talley drove in the game-winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning. Pete Goeman was 3-for-4, scored two runs and drove in one for The Master's College.

The Lakers are in Oklahoma City for Game 3 of the opening round of the NBA playoffs. The Lakers are up two games to none, but looked a little shaky in Game 2. Kobe Bryant scored a game-high 39 points, but the Lakers only won by three points. The Thunder might put up a fight in the first ever playoff game in Oklahoma City.

The Kings lost to the Vancouver Canucks, 6-4, in Game 4 of the Stanley Cup playoffs. The Kings led 1-0 after the first period and 3-2 after the second period. But they gave up four third-period goals as the Canucks rallied to even the playoffs series at two games apiece.

Dustin Brown had a goal and an assist for the Kings. Henrik Sedin scored the go-ahead goal for the Canucks in the third period. Ryan Kesler added an empty netter at the end of the game. Game 5 is in Vancouver on Friday.

The Dodgers bounced back in a big way on the second day of their nine-game road trip. They beat the Reds, 14-6. Andre Ethier and Matt Kemp homered. Rafael Furcal had three hits, a single, a double and a triple, and drove in four runs. James Loney went 3-for-6 and drove in two runs.

The rubber game of the series is today. Vicente Padilla will start for the Dodgers. The Reds will send Mike Leake to the mound. Pregame starts at 3:30 on AM 1220, KHTS.
