Saugus Softball Team Wins Season Opener Print E-mail

sportslocalThe Saugus softball team beat Stockdale of Bakersfield, 6-4, to win its season opener.

Jenna Kelly and Jackie Shimamoto each homered for Saugus. Kelly hit a solo shot and drove in two runs in the game. Shimamoto hit a three-run home run to give her team a 6-2 lead.

In other games, Hart beat Oak Park, 7-3. Paxton Provost drove in three runs with a pinch-hit triple.

In high school baseball, West Ranch pummeled Hueneme, 24-3, and reached the seminfinals of the Easton Tournament. Josh Heinz went 5-for-5 with eight RBIs and a home run for West Ranch. Ryan Keller hit a home run, two doubles, drove in three runs and earned the win on the mound.

Canyon beat Palmdale, 9-8. Kevin Morice and Harry Bennett each had two hits and drove in two runs for Canyon.

Hart won its game against Chaminade, 9-5, behind a 2-for-2 day from Nolan Simmons. Teammate and winning pitcher Josh Wagner went four innings, striking out two, and was 2-for-2 with an RBI.

In high school volleyball, Hart swept Lancaster, 3-0, behind eight kills and 11 assists from J.J. Mosolf.

In high school tennis, Canyon beat Lancaster, 14-4.

In high school swimming, the Golden Valley boys and girls team won dual meets against Lancaster. The girls won, 115-46, and the boys won 86-84.

In college baseball, the College of the Canyons beat L.A. Valley College, 5-2.

The College of the Canyons softball team lost both games of a doubleheader to Citrus College. The team lost the first game, 4-2, and lost the second game, 5-4.

In hockey, Valencia's Shane Harper, a forward with the Everett Silvertips of the Western Hockey League, has signed an entry level pro contract with the Philadelphia Flyers of the National Hockey League. He will play for the Adirondack Phantoms, the Flyers' American Hockey League affiliate.

The 20-year-old Harper leads the Silvertips in scoring with 74 points and 39 goals. He also holds the Silvertips record for most consecutive games played at 208.

The Kings are in Chicago for a game against the Blackhawks tonight. Pregame starts at 5 on AM 1220, KHTS.

The Lakers snapped their three-game losing, but just barely, 109-107, against the Toronto Raptors at Staples Center last night. Kobe Bryant hit the game-winning shot with 1.9 seconds left in the game. Bryant finished with 32 points, six rebounds and six assists. Andrew Bynum added 22 points and Pau Gasol had another strong game with 17 points and nine rebounds.

The Clippers lost to the Orlando Magic, 113-87, and also lost Mike Dunleavy as their general manager. Apparently Clippers management couldn't wait until the end of the game against the Magic to announce Dunleavy's dismissal, releasing a statement about midway through the game.

Drew Gooden and Chris Kaman each scored a team-high 12 points for the Clippers in the meager effort against the Magic.
Six players scored in double figures for the Magic, led by Dwight Howard's 22. He also had 15 rebounds. Teammate Jameer Nelson scored 17 points and had eight assists.
