COC's Ashley Wakefield Earns Co-Player Of The Year Award In Basketball Print E-mail

College of the Canyons' Ashley Wakefield is the California Community College Women's Basketball Coaches Association co-player of the year. She shares the honor with Sumiya Darden of Fresno City College.

Wakefield is the first player from COC to earn the player of the year award from the coaches association. She averaged 18.6 points and 12.9 rebounds per game in leading COC to a perfect 12-0 Western State Conference record and a 12th conference championship.

Wakefield also earned MVP honors for the Western State Conference and four players from COC made the all-conference team. Samantha Cross, Joslynn Frazier and Kelli Lewis join Wakefield on the all-conference team.

Finally, COC coach Greg Herrick was awarded coach of the year for the Western State Conference. It was the eighth time Herrick has won the conference coach of the year award.

In college baseball, The Master's College lost to Vanguard, 3-2. Catcher Nick Jorgensen went 2-for-4 and scored a run for The Master's College.

Down 2-0 in the fifth inning, Vanguard rallied with pair of solo home runs to tie the game. Vanguard scored the winning run in the bottom of the eighth on a pair of errors by The Master's College.

In high school golf, the Valencia boys beat Hart by nine strokes in a match at Griffith Park. Valencia won, 203-212, with three golfers sharing medal honors. Daniel Kim, Trevor Sullivan and Graham Wardle each shot 3-over par in the nine-hole match.

In high school tennis, Valencia beat Camarillo, 14-4. All three doubles teams for Valencia swept their matches.

The Clippers lost to the visiting Phoenix Suns, 127-101, and trailed by as many as 29 points midway through the fourth quarter.
Amar'e Stoudamire scored 30 points and had 14 rebounds for the Suns, which swept the regular season series against the Clippers for the second year in a row.

Chris Kaman had 24 points and nine rebounds to lead the Clippers.

In the NFL, Hart High graduate and quarterback Matt Moore was offered a one-year, $3 million deal by the Carolina Panthers. Moore is expected to compete with Jake Delhomme for the starting quarterback job in Carolina.

The Dodgers have offered former Angels outfielder Garrett Anderson a minor league contract. Anderson hit .268 with 13 home runs for the Atlanta Braves in 2009. He will compete with Brian Giles and Doug Mientkiewicz for the Dodgers fifth outfielder spot.

In the NHL, the Kings are in Nashville to play the Predators tonight. Pregame starts at 4:30 on AM 1220, KHTS.
