Freshman Sparks Hart Baseball Team In Sweep Against West Print E-mail

sportslocalThe Hart baseball team scratched out a 2-1 win over West High of Torrance, scoring the game-winner on a squeeze play. Freshman Luke Persico drove in Hart's first run on a single up the middle. He later scored the winning run on a bunt laid down by Daniel Dietz.

Later in the day, Hart completed the sweep of West with a 10-5 win in the second game of a doubleheader. Persico drove in two runs with a triple in a five-run third inning for Hart.

The Hart softball team scored seven runs in the first inning and cruised to a 7-1 win over Highland. Leadoff hitter Juli Strange had two hits, drove in a run and scored another in Hart's first-inning explosion.

In high school golf, the Valencia boys were 36 shots off the pace in a match against Westlake and Royal at the Los Robles course. Valencia shot 421 as a team with Matt Nolpemeyer leading the way at 1-over 71.

Westlake won with a team score of 385. Royal followed at 399.

The West Ranch boys and girls swim teams lost to Ventura in a pair of dual meets.

The West Ranch boys lost 87-83, despite a record-breaking day by Riley Mita. He set school marks in the 100 freestyle and the 100 backstroke.

The West Ranch girls lost to Ventura, 100-70. Freshman Taylor Polesino won the 50 freestyle and broke the school record in 25.24.

In high school tennis, the West Ranch boys lost to Granada Hills, 77-76 on games. The two teams tied 9-9 on sets.

The Lakers jumped out to an early lead and cruised past the Sacramento Kings, 106-99, to complete the season sweep of their rivals to the north.

Kobe Bryant scored 30 points, Pau Gasol added 28 and Andrew Bynum had a double-double with 21 points and 12 rebounds.

Rookie Tyreke Evans nearly had a triple-double for the Kings with 25 points, 11 rebounds and nine assists.

The Dodgers bullpen is already falling apart with Cory Wade heading for surgery on his right shoulder. He is the latest in a long line of Dodgers relievers who are having injury issues in spring training. Hong-Chih Kuo is having elbow problems and George Sherrill is nursing a sore knee.

To make matters worse, Ronald Belisario is having visa problems and hasn't left his native Venezuela to join the Dodgers in Arizona and Eric Gagne was sent to the minors because he wasn't good enough to stick with the big leaguers.

The Dodgers had the day off Tuesday and play the Chicago White Sox later on this afternoon.
