Hometown Sports Report 2-11-08

Foothill League basketball had some shocking twist in the final night of league play on Friday, and now crunch time has arrived and the playoff seeds are out.  In boy’s action, Valencia knocked off Canyon 70-48, giving the Vikings their first Foothill League Championship since 2005.  The Vikings are alone on top thanks to a Hart 57-53 victory over Saugus.  West Ranch defeated Golden Valley, 84-66 to prevent the Grizzlies from winning a league game.

However, in a sign of respect from the CIF for the leagues competitiveness all year long, Golden Valley will still play basketball this year.  As a matter of fact, all six teams have at least one more game.  Golden Valley, Hart and Canyon all received Wild Card births, and perhaps most shocking, Golden Valley will host their game.  The Grizzlies take on the team they replaced in the Foothill League, Burbank.  KHTS will be live at that game at 7:15pm on Wednesday night.  Hart travels to A.B. Miller, while Canyon will take the long trip to Temecula Valley.  On Friday, #2 Valencia hosts the winner of a Los Altos/Crescenta Valley wild card game, and KHTS will have that game live at 7:15pm.  Saugus hosts former league rival Burroughs, while West Ranch travels to Chaffey.

In girl’s action, Saugus upset Hart to clinch a share of the League Championship with the Indians, 53-38.  Canyon beat Valencia 65-43 for third place, and West Ranch got their first ever league win, beating Golden Valley, 66-64 in triple overtime.

Girl’s wild card action sees Valencia traveling to Crescenta Valley on Thursday night.  On Saturday, Hart hosts Bellflower in round one, while Saugus hosts Dana Hills.  Canyon travels to Mira Costa.  West Ranch got in as an at-large team, and will travel to Foothill for round one action.  Golden Valley did not meet the 12-win minimum to become playoff eligible.

Soccer playoff brackets will be announced today, and KHTS will have all of that information tomorrow morning.
