Mosquitoes: Tips On Keeping The Blood Suckers Away

Dr. Thomas PoluckiAround the world at least two million people each year die from diseases spread by mosquitoes. Here in the United States diseases from mosquitoes are rare but there are some easy ways to avoid the itchy pests.

Don’t give them a breeding ground on your property. All they need is some standing water so check for anywhere that water can pool.

If they are coming from outside your property, you can spray your property with Neem oil. It is non-toxic and won’t hurt plants but mosquitoes hate it. Food grade Neem oil has medicinal properties when used properly.

Citronella candles have little effect and bug zappers kill a lot more beneficial bugs than pests.

Chemical bug sprays that contain DEET and Permethrin have been linked to brain damage and cancer in animals and humans. A new class of insecticides called neonicotinoids has been linked to bee colony collapse disorder which threatens more than 70 percent of crop production in the United States.

For personal protection, eucalyptus oil may be used as an effective mosquito repellent.

Mosquitoes like sweet blood and don’t like B vitamins or garlic in blood, no joke, garlic actually does keep the blood suckers away. As for un-sweetening the blood, most Americans could stand to cut back on the amount of carbohydrates in our diet.

Avoiding mosquito bites is just one more reason to start paying attention to what you eat and how it makes you feel two hours later.
