Editorial: 7 Things You Can Do To Avoid The Flu, By Doctor Polucki

Waiting in the checkout line at a large retail store, you may be tempted by the nurse at the fold up table to get your flu shot while you are waiting to ring up your items.

Why not? It’s convenient. It’s almost free, no doctor’s appointment needed. Every day on the news they say you really should get a flu shot this year because it’s going to be a bad flu season.

Sure there are opinions out there against vaccines but what about the science? Is there a real and unbiased source to get information about flu shot safety and effectiveness?

The Cochrane Database Review is the gold standard for assessing scientific evidence for the effectiveness of medical treatment.

The Cochrane Database Review has concluded that there does not appear to be any benefit in flu shots for children, adults or seniors.

So if the flu shot doesn’t really help, how do I not get the flu?

Stay healthy. The flu season is a perfect storm of stress between less sunshine and fresh air, more stress at work to meet fourth quarter projections, more holiday parties with sweets and alcohol, and the emotional stress of holidays.

7 things you can do now to avoid the flu this year:

  • Especially with the shorter days, getting the daily 4000-8000 units of vitamin D now recommended gets harder for most people. Supplement with a sublingual, dissolves under the tongue, D3/K2 formula. K2 works together with D3 and absorbing it under the tongue bypasses any digestive problems and improves your intake.

  • If the weather allows it, open a window. Recirculated air causes additional respiratory stress.

  • Work up a sweat with exercise for 15-25 minutes every day. More is not better, you are not trying to create more stress. 15-25 minutes gets lymph, major immune fluid, oxygenated and moving effectively through your body, the sweat helps flush out trapped toxins.

  • Get to sleep by 10:00pm. Every hour of sleep before midnight is worth two after when it comes to recharging adrenal function, battling stress.

  • Stay away from sweets and alcohol as much as possible. Both are fuel for metabolic stress and wreak havoc on your immune system.

  • Focus your attention on love and contribution to others during these holidays, that’s what they are really about.

  • If you have a great chiropractor, that measures stress levels on every visit and can show an immediate improvement with treatment, make sure you get in to see them at least twice a month to keep everything as decompressed as possible.
