Winter Shelter Finds Its Place
A few locations approved for homeless shelter.
A committee that has been looking for potential sites for the temporary winter homeless shelter here in Santa Clarita, presented their four choices to the City Council Tuesday night, and of the locations, three were approved.
The locations ranged from Pitchess Detention Center to the current site on Golden Valley Road.
Rivendale was another option, but was taken off the list due to the fact that it is located in an ecologically significant area near Towsley Canyon. Future development in the area around Rivendale was also a reason for the Council to deny it.
As it was proposed, the new sites would build a temporary facility, use it for 2 to 3 years, and then rotate to another location. The temporary buildings however, would be left up.
This is to avoid the $50,000 price tag involved with breaking them down.
Council member TimBen Boydston suggested that those buildings be used for other programs when they are vacated, such as Americorps.
There was also some debate as to the start of the rotation. It was speculated that Castaic did not want to go first, due to some worries over whether or not they would be perceived as a Jail/Trucking/homeless shelter town.
The Council did amend their decision to include a provision that gives City Manager Ken Pulskamp authority to shuffle sites around should unforeseen circumstances arise.
