Where the Red Fern Grows by Caitlin Reza

Good morning KHTS listeners.  My name is Caitlin Reza and I am a fourth
grader at Old Orchard Elementary School in the Newhall School District.

I'll be reviewing Where the Red Fern Grows, written by Wilson Rawls.  It
was written in 1961 and is 121 pages long.

The story is about a boy named Billy, who is 12 years old and lives in
the Ozark Mountains during the Great Depression.  He is longing for his
parents to buy him two coon hound pups, but they can't afford to.  One
day, he found a catalogue that had an advertisement for two hound pups
for $50.00.  He worked for his grandpa for over two years and finally
saved enough money to buy two hound pups that he names Old Dan and
Little Ann.

Billy teaches the dogs how to hunt raccoons almost every day.  The dogs
wind up being really good hunters and even win a championship.  Billy
loved his dogs from the start and there were a lot of exciting
adventures along the way.

This was the very best book I've ever read.  I thought it was great
because of the friendship between Billy and his two dogs.  I liked the
book a lot because sometimes it would make me nervous and sometimes it
would make me sad, and other times, really happy.  I recommend this book
to everyone who likes to read great adventure books and especially to
people who love dogs!
