We're At The Mercy Of Mother Nature
7/19/2004 The Foothill Fire nearly doubled in size Sunday, throwing flames as high as 200 feet and blackening 5,700 acres as it drove residents of Sand Canyon and Fair Oaks Ranch from their homes. More than 1,000 residents of several hundred homes scrambled for personal belongings and evacuated family, pets and livestock as the fire that charred Placerita Canyon on Saturday headed their way. We've been pretty lucky," Savage said. "We're at the mercy of Mother Nature," but winds were relative calm, he said. Two firefighters were injured Sunday, but neither was seriously hurt, said fire Inspector Brian Nicholson. "It's laying down low, but there is still some active fire going," Nicholson said late Sunday. "Structure protection teams (are) right there in the Sand Canyon area."

As of late Sunday, fire crews had not lost a single structure, reported Los Angeles County fire Capt. Mark Savage.

The fire was approaching the end of Sultus Street near Rolling Hills Avenue about 10 p.m., but "our structure protection teams are at all those homes there," Nicholson said.
While the evacuation order that came down Sunday afternoon was dubbed "mandatory" by the Fire Department, some area residents, including Santa Clarita Mayor Bob Kellar, opted to stay in their homes.
"This is my fourth fire. I've seen them a lot worse, although this is bad," Kellar said. "I'm thrilled that nobody's home was lost."
