Voters May Decide Seal Controversy!

Petitions circulate in a new crusade to put the county symbol’s cross up for a vote next spring.

A crusade to save the tiny Christian Seal on the Los AngelesCounty seal has ramped up again with a drive to put the matter before voters in spring 2006. The Los Angeles County Heritage Committee is circulating petitions and hopes to collect 170,000 valid signatures by September 26 to restore the 1957 seal.  That symbol of the county featured the pagan goddess Pomona surrounded by a number of small representations, including a small cross. Last year, under threat of a lawsuit from the American Civil Liberties Union, the seal was redesigned and the cross removed.  “The cross reflects the history of Los AngelesCounty, which began with the founding of the San Gabriel Mission by Father Junipero Serra in September of 1771,” said Supervisor Michael D. Antonovich, who represents the Santa Clarita Valley and voted against the seal revision.
