Vikes Crowned Champs
Valencia beats Hart to stay at the top
It was a big weekend for Santa Clarita sports fans and the biggest story of them all was the Valencia Vikings winning the CIF Southern Section Division 1 softball championship. The Vikings beat the Hart Indians 1-0, with Alyssa Ishibasha getting the game- and championship-wining RBI in the fifth inning -- a single that scored Lani
Bernardino. MVP, however, has clearly been senior pitcher Jordan Taylor, who struck out 13 Indians in the game and never allowed a run to score during the entire post-season. She set a state record by going 32-0 and for the second consecutive year posted over 400 strikeouts.
Of course, give the Hart Indians a lot of credit as well. Destiny Rodino, just a sophomore, allowed just the one run on six hits. And this after having suffered a severe knee injury in the middle of the season. The Indians won 27 games this season and knocked off two national powers to get to the championship game. So congratulations to both teams for a great season of softball.
The track was also active this weekend as the state track and field championships were going on in Sacramento. Saugus’s Shannon Murakami finished fifth in the 1600, Canyon’s Trevor Habberstad took sixth and seventh in the 110 and 300 hurdles, and Saugus’s Katie Dunn finished 12th in the 3200. Heather Snyder from Saugus finished 10th in the discus. The 89th annual state meet was considered the fastest event in the history of the championships.
The Angels win 4-3 over Baltimore
The Dodgers win 5-4 over the Pittsburgh Pirates but are back to a virtual 3-way tie with Arizona and San Diego in the NL West. Dodgers finish up their series with the Pirates starting with the pre-game this afternoon at 3:30 right here on your hometown station.
