Unitarian Universalists Coordinate This Year’s Charity CROP Walk in SCV
SANTA CLARITA, CA – 04 Sept 2005 – This year’s CROP Walk to help alleviate world hunger was sponsored by The Santa Clarita Interfaith Council and coordinated by Rev. Ricky Hoyt, minister of the Santa Clarita Unitarian Universalist congregation.
The walk, held in the morning on Labor Day, Monday, September 5, was moved from being held on Veteran’s Day in previous years, which can fall on a work day, so that more people could participate on the Monday holiday.
Volunteer walkers will raise money by soliciting sponsorships from non-walkers. 25% of the money raised goes to 4 local relief agencies in the Santa Clarita Valley: The Church of Hope Food Pantry, The St. Vincent DePaul Society, The FISH Program of the Santa Clarita United Methodist Church and The SCCDC, which operates the SCV homeless shelter. The remained of the money raised goes to Church World Service, who sponsors self-help programs to raise people out of poverty around the world, or, unique for charity drives, the donors can designate their funds to go to any of dozens of alternative relief agencies.
Unitarian Universalists of Santa Clarita Valley is a growing liberal religious community within Santa Clarita, sponsoring programs to make the community and world a better place. Services are held every Sunday at 10:30 am at Newhall Elementary School.
