Traffic Alert: Roads Closed Due To Amgen

The arrival of the Amgen Tour of California today will mean changing traffic patterns and temporary closures for affected streets on the west side of the City of  Santa Clarita.

Residents and businesses are urged to plan ahead for changing traffic patterns and road closures as the City prepares to welcome an estimated 100,000 spectators and 144 of the world’s top cyclists to the City for the Stage 6 Finish near the Westfield Valencia Town Center and the Hyatt Valencia for the internationally renowned race.

Cyclists will enter Santa Clarita from Highway 126 at approximately 2:20 p.m., and travel through the ValenciaIndustrial Center to McBean Parkway where they will begin a three lap “circuit” traveling westbound on Valencia Boulevard, northbound on Tourney Road, eastbound on Magic Mountain Parkway to the eventual finish back on McBean Parkway near Town Center Drive.

McBean Parkway between Magic Mountain Parkway and Valencia Boulevard will be the most impacted section of road, with a 24 hour closure beginning at 10 p.m. Friday, February 23rd, and ending at 10 p.m. Saturday, February 24th.

This section of road will be home to a variety of pre and post race festivities including the:  Lifestyle Festival, Kids Zone, Entertainment and Awards Stage and Finish Line.

Affected roadways in the industrial center will experience short term closures whereby vehicle access will be restricted before and after the cyclists pass by, but will otherwise remain open.

The City of Santa Clarita is urging the public to log onto www.Santa-Clarita.com/TourOfCA for all information pertaining to the race. “The City’s website is a great tool for the public to use and contains detailed maps and descriptions pertaining to traffic alerts, but also has detailed information relating to the race day festivities,” explained Rick Gould, Director of Parks, Recreation and Community Services.

Although traffic flow will be restricted in parts of Santa Clarita, access to residences and businesses will still be open for the majority of the day with brief delays occurring during the time that the professional cyclists pass through town.

“The City of Santa Clarita is very aware of and sympathetic to the needs of our residents and we’re making every effort to make the impacts on traffic as smooth as possible,” added Gould.

Due to the size and scope of the race, the City of Santa Clarita has launched a considerable effort to notify residents of potential impacts as well as promote what is anticipated to be the largest event in Santa Clarita history.

The Local Organization Committee for the Santa Clarita leg of the race, comprised mainly of City staff, has contacted every business along the

race route to inform them of potential impacts. In addition the City has mailed nearly 100,000 postcard notifications to each residence in the City of Santa Clarita and unincorporated areas of the valley.

Notification efforts combined with a full scale marketing campaign that has included bridge banners, streetlight banners, print ads and more have attempted to not only raise general awareness, but hopefully get the community excited about the race.

“The Amgen Tour of California is going to be an unforgettable experience for all of those who attend. We’re extremely excited to be able to host this world class event. We are proud to showcase our City and our community as world class hosts!” said City Manager Ken Pulskamp.
