Shooting Suspect Arrested
Gang member fired two shots
After follow up investigation, deputies from the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff Station's Career Offenders Burglary Robbery Apprehension Team (COBRA) arrested German Huanosta, MH/23, of Newhall in connection with a shooting incident that occurred near San Fernando Road and Valle Del Oro on Wednesday, July 11, 2007.
During the July 11th incident, the victims were getting into their car when another vehicle drove past and one of the occupants yelled gang related statements and made apparent gang related hand gestures. As the victims retreated, the suspect reportedly stopped his car, got out and fired two gunshots in their direction. The suspect then returned to his vehicle and fled the area. The victims also reported they believed the incident was motivated by racial hatred.
Detectives were able to positively identify the suspect who is a Newhall resident with known gang affiliation. After review by the District Attorney's Office, the suspect was charged with three felony counts of Assault with a Deadly Weapon. Although gang enhancements were added to the charges, the District Attorney's Office determined the case did not meet the criteria for a hate related enhancement. Huanosta could face up to 25 years in state prison if convicted.
He is being held at the Men's Central Jail - Los Angeles without bail pending future court proceedings and United States Immigration proceedings.
