Servers Picket Newhall Denny’s

Four waiters picketed outside Denny’s in Newhall on Friday, claiming the restaurant ran out of soap on the Fourth of July weekend and served meals on dishes that had only been rinsed, prompting the servers to walk out.

All four of the servers were suspended because of their action and are awaiting the results of an investigation, they said Friday.
“You cannot run a restaurant without dish soap, clean dishes and silverware,” said Anna Castillo, who identified herself as a 30-year veteran of the Denny’s corporation and a waitress at the Newhall restaurant for 17 years.
The problems arose Saturday, July 2, when the restaurant ran out of dishwasher soap and began simply rinsing the dishes, she said.
“We all walked out,” waitress Yolanda Salmeron said. By continuing to serve food on allegedly unwashed plates, “We were jeopardizing the health of the public, especially children. I wasn’t about to do that,” she said.
According to Salmeron, fresh-cooked food — pancakes and hamburgers — were placed on unwashed wooden counter tops in the kitchen because there weren’t any clean plates.
