Seniors Beware: Thieves Use Distraction To Rob
A pair of suspects have been targeting female senior citizens in local supermarkets in the Santa Clarita Valley, prompting Sheriffs officials to caution seniors to take extra care while grocery shopping.
A video from January 3, 2007 from Food 4 Less in Canyon Country, and a second video, recording an incident on December 29, 2006 at the Ralph’s Grocery store in Valencia, show two suspects distracting female senior citizens, and then stealing the wallet out of the senior’s purse.
“The routine is to take up a conversation with the senior while they are shopping and distract them from their shopping cart and purse. One suspect asks the senior a question about something on a top shelf, while the other is taking things from her purse. As soon as they get what they want from the purse, they abandon their cart and leave the store,” explains Sgt. James Anderson of the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriffs Station.
Sheriffs’ officials are warning seniors to be aware of their belongings while shopping. Additionally, Sheriffs officials are working with grocery store personnel to be on the look out for the two suspects: #1 female, black, black hair, brown eyes, 5’5”, 190-210 pounds, 35-40 years old. #2-female black, brown or blond hair, brown eyes, 5’5” to 5’8”, 190-210 pounds, approximately 20 years old.
Anyone with information should call the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriffs Station Burglary/Fraud Team, Detective Jeffrey Jackson at 255-1121, ext. 5135 or Sgt. James Anderson at ext. 5136.
