SCV Spring 2006 “Book Flood” Benefits Five Louisiana Schools

SCV Disaster Coalition members and contributors community-wide are gearing up for a massive book drive to re-stock the libraries at five flood-damaged elementary schools in Houma, Louisiana.

Hurricane Rita pounded the community of Houma, Although students are back in class, they still lack a number of key learning resources. Chief among them: library books.

"The Book Flood" drive aims to collect 20,000 books in the SCV between April 24-28 for delivery to the five Houma schools, which serve more than 1,300 students.

Joining the effort are the Sulphur Springs Union, Newhall, Saugus Union and Castaic Union School Districts.

In addition to the 20,000 books targeted for collection, the coalition is adding a credit at Borders Books of at least $13,000.00 for the Houma schools to use to purchase additional books. Santa Clarita Mayor, Laurene Weste presented a check to Border’s for $10,000.00 for the Houma Schools.
