Santa Clarita Named 5th Safest City in Nation

The City of Santa Clarita is the 5th safest city in the nation for cities with a population over 100,000, according to crime rates from the FBI report for January through June of 2004.

The data provided by the FBI showed that the City of Santa Clarita ranked 5th in the nation for crimes per 1,000 population. Santa Clarita ranks as the fourth safest city in the State of California.

“Santa Clarita continues to rank as one of America’s safest cities. This is due to a very proactive approach to community policing and law enforcement by the Sheriffs Department, the City and the community,” commented Mayor Cameron Smyth.

Violent crime in the City, which includes murder, forcible rape, robbery and aggravated assault, was lower during the first six months of 2004 compared to 2003, despite a 1.4 % increase in population during the same time period.

Santa Clarita ranks as the nation’s second safest city for cities with a population over 150,000.

As Santa Clarita’s population continues to increase, the City needs to continue its vigilance in providing proactive law enforcement. Special teams, including COBRA (Career Offender Burglary Robbery Assault) and CIT (Community Interaction Team), as well as Sheriff sub-stations, (located in Newhall and Canyon Country) are an integral part of the plan to help Santa Clarita remain a top safe city.
