Runners Legislation To Restore Rates For Docs Is Signed By Governor This Week
Senator George Runner (R-Antelope Valley) joint-authored urgency legislation with Senator Denise Ducheny (D-San Diego) to restore the Medi-Cal rates for physicians and medical providers implemented on January 1, 2006.
“Every time there is a cut in Medi-Cal rates for physicians, it decreases access and unfairly penalizes physicians who care for Medi-Cal patients,” said Senator George Runner. “This legislation will ensure that the rates will be restored.”
Senate Bill 912 is sponsored by the California Medical Association and a coalition of physicians and medical providers that were affected by this January 1, 2006 five percent rate cut. This legislation will immediately restore the rates for physicians and medical providers. Last year, Runner worked diligently with both the California Medical Association and Governor Schwarzenegger’s office to prevent a retroactive cut that was a result of a court decision.
To prevent the reduction in rates, Runner co-authored Assembly Bill 1735 (De La Torre and Aghazarian) that ensured the retroactive Medi-Cal cuts would not take place. Runner continued, “We need to focus on eliminating Medi-Cal fraud and decreasing the size of benefits, not cutting rates to the physicians and medical providers who serve Medi-Cal patients.”
SB 912 was signed into law on Friday, February 17, 2006.
