Runner Says Best Solution is to Break Up LAUSD Into Smaller Districts

Sen. Runner expresses disappointment with an announced compromise.

(SACRAMENTO) --- Senator George Runner (R-Antelope Valley) expresses disappointment with an announced compromise that will do little to increase the accountability of Los Angeles Unified School District. The new compromise could add more confusion for parents. "This compromise leaves parents in my district with even less input and just adds more confusion as to who is ultimately accountable to them and their children. The proposed compromise doesn't just rearrange the deck chairs, it adds new deck chairs and then rearranges them providing no real accountability," said Runner.

Yesterday, the Mayor was also offered a compromise that would have allowed mayoral control of the school district for five years and then allow the voters to decide whether they want to keep mayoral control or opt to split up LAUSD into smaller, community-oriented districts. Runner said, "Adding more layers with no new accountability is not a solution - it will not allow the voices of parents to truly be heard.  I was hoping we could find a compromise that would also involve the voters, since it is their children who attend LAUSD's schools." Runner will continue to work with the Mayor and all interested parties in order to find a compromise that will provide parents with more control of their children's schools.
