Reps Swarm on Stonecrest to Seek Support
Mayor Bob Kellar and several Santa Clarita city representatives canvassed the Stonecrest neighborhood Saturday morning to bring attention to a proposal that could bring the eastern swath of the valley within city limits. . .
City Council members Cameron Smyth and Laurene Weste united with Kellar to pitch the benefits of annexing the small community with the city.
In teams of two, the council members and city officials fanned out to knock on more than 640 doors up and down the streets of upper and lower Stonecrest.
A flier outlining the benefits of joining the city was left on doorsteps of those who were away from home.
The main concern of several residents approached by the city was a possible rise in taxes should the neighborhood be wrapped into the city limits.
Smyth said taxes and fees would not change unless voters approved tax hikes. However, annexation would allow that section of the community to access city services, he said.
Increased police protection, a savings on city service fees and improved city maintenance services are benefits to the annexation proposal, Smyth said.
“Were just here to give them the information and they can make the call,” he said.
