Red Cross Shelter Will Close This Week
As a result of the recent rains, the American Red Cross has been running an emergency shelter for displaced residents at College of the Canyons...
Shelter organizer Bill Frazier says that the Red Cross is trying to help people. Many people are showing up at the shelter seeking federal disaster relief funds, which will not be available unless President Bush proclaims Southern California a federal disaster area.
The county of Los Angeles has been declared a state of emergency, but that does not qualify as a federal declaration.
The Red Cross had housed up to 127 people since the storms began in late December, and even Tuesday night, 45 people were still living in the COC gym.
Officials hope to close the shelter and send residents back home this week.
