Read to a Dog Program Begins at Community Center

In an effort to help children learn how to read, the City of Santa Clarita’s new Community Center will be hosting the Read to a Dog Program Wednesday, February 22 from 5:30 to 6:30 pm.  Every one is invited to come out with their children and practice their reading skills in a non-intimidating environment.
Specially trained reading assistance dogs from the Santa Clarita Reading Education Assistance Dogs (READ) Program will be present for the program. The READ program was designed for youth who are struggling to learn how to read to practice in a comfortable and relaxed manner.
“So many youth struggle to learn basic reading skills and practicing with adults can make them feel embarrassed,” said Community Center Coordinator, Hope Horner. “The reading assistance dogs can help children feel comfortable while they practice their reading skills. Children can feel free to make mistakes and not worry while they read along with the dogs.”
The Community Center is located at 22421 Market Street in Newhall, adjacent to the Jan Heidt Metrolink Station. This event is free and open to the public.
For more information, please contact the Community Center at 661/286-4006 or the READ Program at 661/313-1447.
