Providence Recognized For Nursing Excellence

The American Nurses Credentialing Center recently announced that Providence Holy Cross Medical Center has received Magnet Status for nursing excellence.

The 254-bed Providence Holy Cross is the first community hospital in Los Angeles County to receive this recognition. It is the 11th hospital in California to receive Magnet Status. Two larger hospitals -- Cedars-Sinai Medical Center and UCLA Medical Center in Westwood – also have received Magnet Status in the county.

The ANCC’s Magnet Recognition Program provides consumers with the ultimate benchmark to measure the quality of care that they can expect to receive.  The program is based on quality standards of nursing practice as defined in the American Nurses Association’s Scope and Standards for Nurse Administrators.

Only 251 (5 percent) of the 5,000 hospitals in the United States have received Magnet Status.  Many Magnet Hospitals are large medical centers or university hospitals.  In U.S. News & World Report’s annual “America’s Best Hospitals” in 2006, seven of the top ten ranked hospitals held Magnet Status.  Providence Holy Cross also was listed in the past as one of “America’s Best Hospitals” by U.S. News & World Report.

“Receiving Magnet Status assures that we will recruit and retain well-qualified nurses who wish to care for patients in an environment that promotes excellence and which rewards them for their good work,” said Kerry Carmody, Administrator, Providence Holy Cross Medical Center.  “This then attracts other skilled employees to our Medical Center as well as the finest physicians to our medical staff.”

By receiving Magnet Status, Providence Holy Cross has proven that it maintains exemplary staffing ratios, supports continuing education and competence for its nurses, and empowers nurses by having them participate in the decision-making process as it relates to nursing practice.

The Magnet recognition is for a four-year period.
