Providence Raises Over $350,000.00 For Trauma Center
Forty active members of the Providence Holy Cross Medical Center Guild were recognized for raising $351,682 between 2001 and 2005 through cash donations and sales in the Medical Center Gift Shop. The funds will help with the expansion of Providence Holy Cross Medical Center’s Emergency Department and Trauma Center expansion.
When fundraising for The Golden Hour capital campaign began in 2003, the E.D. had 16 beds. This expansion will create a 34 bed facility capable of treating more acute patients. Emergency Department staff treated nearly 50,000 patients in 2005 in a space originally designed for 15,000 people in 1977. Nearly 1,200 children each month receive care in the Providence Holy Cross Emergency Department.
Guild members donate more than 14,000 hours of time working in the Gift Shop, I.C.U., Emergency Department and other departments. “We’re here to give back,” said Rose Antenucci, President of the Guild. “The Guild is happy to help in anyway it can to further the efforts of Providence Holy Cross Medical Center. We work as a team, together with the Foundation and Administration Departments, to maintain the level of excellence in service we give to everyone who comes to us for help.”
The success of Providence Holy Cross Foundation’s capital campaign, The Golden Hour, raised the $7.5 million for the expansion. Construction crews broke ground on the expansion in August, 2005, and it will be complete by January, 2007. Donations are still being accepted to complete this life-saving project.
Los Angeles County originally had 23 trauma centers; now only 13 remain in the network. The critical nature of Emergency and Trauma Departments in Southern California is part of the reason Providence Holy Cross is expanding. Each year and each time an E.D. closes, Holy Cross sees an increase in patients, from 2,286 in February of 2000, to 4,005 in February 2006. The medical center is planning this expansion to keep pace with the increasing population in the northern Los Angeles County area.
