Chase Ends in Newhall

A San Joaquin Valley man led police on a high-speed chase on and off Interstate 5 on Tuesday before he was trapped on a dead-end street in Newhall and arrested.

Robert Talavera, 31, of Lathrop, was arrested for speeding, evading arrest, driving without a valid driver’s license and misdemeanor hit-and-run following the 14-minute chase, said California Highway Patrol spokeswoman Wendy Moore Hahn. Talavera also faces possible parole violations because he is a parolee, she said.
A woman, Tarina Banghart, 26, of Manteca, was not charged with a crime. Banghart, who is pregnant, is the registered owner of the red 1999 Pontiac Grand Am that led CHP officers and sheriff’s deputies on the chase.
Hahn said Talavera was unable to tell officers why he chose to run when the CHP pulled him over on the southbound I-5 near Templin Highway a little after 10 a.m. Tuesday.
A CHP unit clocked the Grand Am at 91 mph before stopping it on the side of the freeway. But when the CHP officer walked toward the car during the traffic stop, Talavera took off and the chase was on.
