Placerita Slates Community Service Day
Junior High kids get active in the community.
Placerita Junior High School will host its third Community Service Day on Wednesday, May 2, from 8:15 until 2:30 p.m. This event is designed to match students who are interested in fulfilling community service hours with service organizations seeking volunteer participation.
Representatives of organizations interested in recruiting junior high school students to participate in their programs will be available to meet students and provide information. Participants include Action, Betty Ferguson Foundation, California Youth Chess League, City of Santa Clarita, City of Santa Clarita Community Center, Domestic Violence Center, Girl Scouts, Habitat for Humanity, Heads Up Horseback Therapy Ranch, Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Health Foundation, Hunger Defense Fund, Junior Achievement of Southern California, Lutheran Social Services, Michael Hoefflin Foundation, Santa Clarita Adult Day Health Care, SCV Food Pantry, SCV Newhall Optimist Club, SCV Pregnancy Center, SCV School and Business Alliance and Santa Clarita Valley Youth Project.
Service organizations can expect to meet more than 1000 students during the course of the day. Included in this number are more than 300 students who are required to do community service work to qualify for the National Junior Honor Society.
"Our goal is to build connections between the school and the service community so that our students not only can do their required community service hours, but also can begin long-term volunteer commitments to the community in which they live," said Principal Mike Kuhlman.
