Online Registration A Hit For Relay

Relay For Life participants like the new method

This was the first year that online registration and fundraising have been stressed by the committee which organizes the American Cancer Society’s Santa Clarita Valley Relay For Life, and the effort has paid off big-time for the local event.

Even though the $142,518 raised online was only a small part of the local event’s total proceeds approaching $500,000, the tally was enough to rank the local fundraiser No. 1 out of 54 similar events in Los Angeles County.

The online proceeds ranked second in all of California, with only a mega-event in Bakersfield exceeding the local Relay’s online proceeds. There are more than 250 Relay For Life events throughout the state.

Out of about 4800 Relays throughout the United States, the Santa Clarita Valley event came in 17th in online proceeds.

“Of course, these numbers will change—some Relays come later in the summer,” explained Theresa Kerr, co-chair of the local Relay For Life and Web master for the local event for the past two years. “We will finish this year up in the top percentile, for sure!”

Online registration has made it easier for teams to sign up for the local 24-hour walking event, and easier for individual walkers to join teams online. Participants who send out donor letters asking friends and relatives to support their efforts are now able to send a Web address so donors can contribute online instead of writing a check and sending it through regular mail, as in the past.

RelayThe local event’s Web site at www.scvrelay.org also provided up-to-date information on individual teams and the walk itself, and provided a calendar of upcoming activities as the June 2-3 date for the local walk approached.

This year’s Relay ends with a wrap party for committee members June 21, but plans are already underway for next year’s event. Local residents interested in serving on the organizing committee for the 2008 SCV Relay can call 298-0886, option 3 or contact local Relay staff member at anita.dominguez@cancer,org.
