Newhall To Appoint Two New Principals
The Governing Board of the Newhall School District will be asked to appoint two new principals at their February 20th meeting. Candace Fleece will be recommended as principal of Stevenson Ranch Elementary School and Cynthia McCarty will be recommended for the position at Pico Canyon Elementary School.
The opening at Stevenson Ranch occurred after Principal Diane von Buelow announced her retirement plans, effective at the end of the school year. The opening at Pico Canyon was created when Nancy Copley was selected as assistant superintendent for the district. Both current principals opened their respective schools, and have been highly successful in establishing effective programs for student achievement and community involvement. Their successors were carefully selected by a process which involved over 30 people, including administrators, teachers and parents, to insure continued success. Final choices were made by Marc Winger, superintendent of the district.
Ms. Fleece started in nsd as a substitute teacher. She was soon hired as a kindergarten and then upper grade teacher at Meadows. After two years she transferred to Stevenson Ranch where she taught fourth grade. In 2004 she was promoted to Assistant Principal at Stevenson Ranch. Candy has been an active nsd parent, an assistant principal, teacher, board member, committee chair, and nsd consultant. She will serve as principal at Stevenson Ranch effective July 1, 2007.
Cynthia McCarty comes to Newhall from the Glendale Unified School District where she has served as an assistant principal for the past three years. Cynthia holds a Bilingual Cross-cultural Language and Academic Development Certificate and special certification in reading and languages arts. She has extended experience with the Glendale District as an intervention teacher has taught in the upper and lower grades. Cynthia was an active member of the Glendale’s English Language Advisory Committee and Safe and Drug Free Committee Schools. She will begin her assignment at Pico Canyon effective February 26th, 2007.
“We’ve selected two outstanding people as our new principals, using a rigorous and comprehensive selection process,” said Marc Winger, superintendent. “I am looking forward to working with these great additions to the Newhall administrative team.”
