McKeon Talks About Iraq

Rep. Howard P. “Buck” McKeon was in Iraq on the day deposed dictator Saddam Hussein was captured by U.S. troops — but the congressman didn’t find out about the historic timing of his visit until he arrived in Germany on his way home....

“We were not privy to the capture,” he said during a Monday morning conference call.
However, McKeon said Iraq is still a dangerous place even with the capture of Hussein, especially with the amount of munitions throughout the war-torn country. McKeon said contracts are in place with companies to destroy the weapons, but the magnitude is so immense, it will take time.
McKeon said the morale of the troops and the conditions of the schools created the most significant impacts.
“I can’t say (the troops) were overjoyed,” said McKeon, R-Santa Clarita. “But they felt good about what they were doing. They were able to bring freedom to the Iraqis. They felt great about that.”
