Mayor Weste & Councilman Kellar: Open Letter To Community

Dear Santa Clarita Valley Community:

It is our pleasure, as representatives of the Santa Clarita City Council sub-committee on the Cemex issue, to inform you that Congressman Howard “Buck” McKeon has introduced HR 5471, “Soledad Canyon Mine Leases Adjustment Act.”  This bill in the United States House of Representatives will protect both the needs of our community, as well as the financial concerns of Cemex.

McKeon's legislation cancels the Cemex leases and prohibits the Bureau of Land Management from re-leasing the land except at “historic levels,” which are defined in the bill as 300,000 tons of aggregate produced for sale per calendar year.  In exchange, Cemex will be given minerals of equal value in the form of credits that can be used in other areas of California .  The value assigned to the Cemex leases is equal to an amount that includes the amount paid to the for the leases, and amounts expended by Cemex in securing the leases and bring them into production.

As you may know, the City of Santa Clarita is joined by over 100 organizations in opposition to the Cemex mega-mining plan to extract 5 million tons of aggregate from Soledad Canyon over a 20-year period.  The project would result in blasting, excavating, crushing and screening aggregate from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Saturday.  The addition of 1,200 big gravel truck trips per day, significant amounts of dust and emissions released into the air at a level more than twice the State risk standard, plus a dramatic increase in noise and a decrease in area property values top the list of reasons the City continues to fight the plan.

It is imperative that our community support Congressman McKeon’s efforts in moving this important bill through the House of Representatives.  Your support and assistance are urgently needed!  We would appreciate it if you could please send a letter to Congressman McKeon and let him know that you are in support of HR 5471 and would encourage the full efforts and influence of his office behind this bill.  Please send your correspondence to:

Honorable Howard “Buck” McKeon
Member of Congress
26650 The Old Road, Suite 203
Santa Clarita, CA  91381-9916

The City of Santa Clarita will be doing everything we can to assist Congressman McKeon in moving this legislation forward.  Thank you in advance for your participation!

Sincerely,

Laurene Weste                          Bob Kellar
