Local Author To Sign New Book

Valencia Sport Saddlery is pleased to announce that Saturday, December 4th, local author Joan Fry will sign copies of her new book, BACKYARD HORSEKEEPING: THE ONLY GUIDE YOU'LL EVER NEED, from noon to 2:00 p.m.

Pleasure riding has become increasingly popular all over the country.  Fry's intention is to show horse lovers that they don't have to board their horse in order to enjoy him.  They can do it themselves.  She goes into the pros and cons of indoor living (a barn) vs. outdoor living (a pasture or pipe corral).  She discusses how to find a good veterinarian and shoer, and how to buy horse-related items ranging from fly masks to fencing.

Additional chapters cover the well-stocked tackroom, the basics of ground manners, exercises for you and your horse, and how to teach your horse to free longe--no longe line.  If you don't already own a horse, this book explains how to choose a good one, and offers caretaker tips on how to keep him sound, safe, and happy.

Fry, a former Newhall resident, wrote BACKYARD HORSEKEEPING mainly for first-time backyard owners, but even experienced owners will benefit from a refresher course, particularly the chapters on feed and supplements--both "vetted" by an equine nutritionist.

Published by The Lyons Press, BACKYARD HORSEKEEPING is the ultimate how-to book.  According to Karen Craighead, Instructor in the Western Division of the Equestrian Science program at William Woods University, "BACKYARD HORSEKEEPING: THE ONLY GUIDE YOU'LL EVER NEED is everything the title says it is.  Written in easy-to-read, easy-to-understand terms. . . . I would recommend it to any new horse owner, or anyone contemplating horse ownership."

It is also the ultimate horse reference book.  C. Mike Tomlinson, DVM, FEI three-day eventing veterinarian, pronounces it "An essential reference for the new horse owner," and Brian Sosby, Managing Editor of Equestrian magazine, calls it "A treasure trove of information.  Thorough in its content, this work includes all the important topics while offering candid and useful advice.  [Fry writes] with a sense of wit and respect for her equine subjects."

Valencia Sport Saddlery is located at 26046 Bouquet Canyon Road, Canyon Country.  The phone number is 661-255-6713.
