Lake Cleanup Could Take Up to 5 Years
Oil cleanup at Pyramid Lake has cost millions of dollars so far and could continue for five years, an oil pipeline official said Friday. Although the lake is open for recreation, a section remains separated by booms, and some oil is still floating on the water.
Much cleanup on the land has been accomplished, but much more remains.
A 14-inch-diameter oil pipeline ruptured on March 23 when rain-saturated earth slid out from under it, sending some 143,000 gallons of crude rolling down the hillside, under Interstate 5 and into the Posey Canyon cove of Pyramid Lake.
