Hunger Defense Fund On A Mission

Local food bank up for piece of $1,000,000.

The Hunger Defense Fund, a non-profit food bank in Santa Clarita is participating in an effort to raise as much food and monetary donations as they can for March and April.

They do this because the Feinstein Foundation has offered up $1 million to hunger-fighting agencies across the country and developed a challenge to determine just how to split that money up.

It’s called the Feinstein Challenge, and it divides the $1 million up proportionately amongst the food banks based upon how much they bring in on their own during this two month time period.

Often, simple needs like food can be overlooked in Santa Clarita, but the Hunger Defense Fund helped out over 2,800 needy children and their families last year alone. That’s 14% more than the year before.

Also, they operate on a 1% budget, which means that 99 cents from every dollar they bring in goes directly to the cause.

Food drives can be scheduled through them if you would like to help. To find out more, visit their page on HometownStation.com by clicking here.

Right now, the Hunger Defense Fund says that their biggest needs are the following:

Canned Goods: Meat (Tuna, Chicken, Vienna Sausage), pasta sauce, pasta (Spaghetti-O’s), vegetables, fruit, beans, chili, and soup.

Dry Goods: spaghetti, rice, pinto beans, crackers, ramen noodles, cereal,  and oatmeal.

Personal Hygiene Items: soap, shampoo, toothpaste, toothbrushes, deodorant, and feminine hygiene products.

Baby Items: diapers and wipes.
