The City of Santa Clarita, along with other community organizations, has a host of events planned to help residents celebrate the birth of the nation. The 2006, 4th of July list of activities include: the Independence Day 5k run, hosted by the Santa Clarita Runners; the Annual 4th of July Parade, hosted by the SCV Parade Committee, a free concert in Newhall Park featuring the band “L.A. Carpool,” and a fireworks extravaganza at the Westfield Valencia Town Center, courtesy of the City of Santa Clarita. Along with providing a full day of events for residents to enjoy, the City is urging residents to be safe.

The 4th of July activities kick off with the Santa Clarita Rotary Club Pancake Breakfast on San Fernando Road between 5th and 6th Streets at 7 a.m. Activities continue with the Independence Day 5k Run put on by the Santa Clarita Runners beginning and ending at Newhall Park. Registration will begin at 7 a.m. and the event will feature a 5K race, a 5K non-competitive walk, and a Kids’ K Fun Run. More information can be found at www.scrunners.org.

The annual Santa Clarita 4th of July Parade will begin at 9:45 a.m. on San Fernando Road in Old Town Newhall. The route travels down Lyons Avenue to Orchard Village and finishes at Newhall Park. The Parade has been a long-standing tradition in the Santa Clarita Valley since it began in 1932. For more information about the Santa Clarita 4th of July Parade residents can log on to www.scvparade.com. Following the parade there will be a free concert held in Newhall Park, sponsored by the 4th of July Parade Committee.

Guests will groove to the rhythms of renowned Pop-Salsa band “L.A. Carpool” from 11:45 a.m. to 1:45 p.m. and enjoy delicious food provided by a host of vendors. 4th of July will be capped off by a breathtaking fireworks display over the Westfield Valencia Town Center sponsored by the City of Santa Clarita. The fireworks show entitled “American Dreams” will begin at approximately 9:15 p.m. and last about thirty minutes. For more information regarding the fireworks show, go to www.santa-clarita.com.

In an effort to assure the 2006 4th of July is fire-free, the City of Santa Clarita has teamed up with the Los Angeles County Fire Department and the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station to remind residents about the high fire danger and that even during 4th of July weekend, fireworks are illegal in the City of Santa Clarita and in Los Angeles County. “Residents should know that fireworks are not only illegal in Santa Clarita, they are a fire hazard and one that we will not tolerate. Our message to residents is that we have a lot to celebrate and be grateful for on this wonderful day, let’s do it in a safe and responsible manner,” commented Mayor Laurene Weste.
